Case new
High Reach Demolition Rigs
Today's progressive demolition contractors demand the best in plant
and equipment to enable them to comply with stringent safety and
environment regulations as well as maintaining an efficient and
viable business. To meet their individual requirements, Case has
introduced a range of four hydraulic excavators specifically
developed for use by the demolition industry.
Based on the standard Case CX290, CX330, CX460 and CX800 models, the
high reach demolition attachment configurations extend from 17m up
to 40m. The flagship CX800 is equipped with a unique telescoping
boom enabling the operator to work between 28m and 40m without
changing the equipment.
A major feature of all the new CX demolition rigs is the ability to
change from high reach equipment to standard boom and dipper arm
configuration or vice versa in around 30 minutes thereby enabling
the customer to achieve maximum machine utilization in both
demolition and earthmoving.
Changing over attachments is achieved using a hook system to pick up
the required equipment from purpose-built cradles. To effect the
change over, the operator positions the attachment and then folds
and lowers the unit into a cradle. Safety pins are removed from the
boom foot whilst the operator releases the power operated locking
pins followed by uncoupling of the hydraulic service lines.
The boom is then fully lowered onto the cradle and the attachment
separated from the base machine.
The procedure is reversed to mount the standard boom and dipper,
already positioned on another cradle. Again, the operator connects
to this equipment with the hook on the base machine. After coupling,
the joint is locked with the powered pin and the safety locks then
engaged with the service lines reconnected.
Protection from falling debris is provided for the base machine by
heavy-duty steel roof and front windscreen guards. Heavy duty belly
plates, 11mm-12mm thick, underneath the upper structure protects the
valve blocks, pumps, drive motors, hydraulic tank, pipework and
engine.
In developing the high reach CX range of demolition rigs, Case
engineers paid particular attention to safety. As a result safety
devices have been incorporated in the machine to ensure safe
operation. These include hydraulic cut-out safety valves and an
electronic total moment indicator (TMI) fitted to the boom foot.
This device displays colored lamp signals indicating safe working,
approach to safe working load (SWL) and overload conditions. It can
be adjusted according to the ideal work tool for sites where
reasonable working heights are involved.
To improve operator visibility through the glazed cab roof on high
reach applications, an hydraulically tilting cab or seat is
available. Controls are located in the seat armrests and as the seat
moves with the operator, adjustment to the appropriate angle can be
made providing comfortable working positions for long periods at
heights of up to 40m in safety and without incurring neck or back
strain.
In high reach configuration, with a three-piece attachment
arrangement, the Case CX800 has a working height of 28m extending to
40m, forward reach of 20m and a maximum tool weight of 2.5tons.
Equipped with standard earthmoving attachments, the excavator weighs
a mighty 78.6t. Power output from the Isuzu six-cylinder
turbocharged engine is an impressive 331kW. Equally impressive is
the machine's digging depth of 10.65m with an attachment
configuration of a 8.40m boom and 5.60m dipperstick. Backhoe bucket
capacities span 2,400 up to 5,000 liters. Maximum digging and
breakout forces with this configuration are 20,900daN and 32,200daN
respectfully.
An undercarriage width of 3.48m with 600mmm wide tracks simplifies
transportation as the attachments are fully retractable to 13.02m
and, without the need to remove the demolition tool, there is
considerable saving in both time and money.

First
Remote controlled Komatsu PC750SE-6 HRD excavator
HRD excavators are continually being modified to create a
safer working environment, for example, the introduction of ROPS
(roll over protection system), FOPS (falling object protection
system) and the increasing use of CCTV cameras. The next example is
an HRD excavator fitted with a remote control system. APB Plzen, a
Czech Republic demolition contractor, is the first to purchased a
Komatsu PC750SE-6 High Reach Demolition excavator with remote
control system. Almost all functions within the cab can be
controlled by the remote from a distance of 100mtr.
The system offers the operator the freedom to work at any point on
site, providing the best possible view of the work area. Using
the remote control eliminates the need for a camera system, and
is ideal for dangerous demolition work, and areas where it's
difficult to see.
The Komatsu PC750SE-6 High Reach Demolition excavator is currently
being used to tear down a large factory and surrounding buildings
near the city center of Prague. Once the area is cleared, a sports
arena and complex will be build on site. The new facility will host
the World Ice Hockey Championships 2004.

Kobelco's
SK1600D building demolition machine with 50-meter boom
TOKYO - Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. has launched
a building demolition machine that reaches above 50 meters.
Marketing of the machine, designed for the Japanese market, began in
late July. Kobelco has already received its first orders for the
specialized equipment, called the SK1600D, from Nabekai, Japans
biggest demolition company.
The SK1600D is equipped with a Kobelco nibbler attached to a
three-piece boom and one-piece arm extending to 50.86 meters, a
length long enough to reach a 17-story building. The SK1600D uses a
100-ton crawler crane carrier, a size noted for its stability and
low center of gravity, and is equipped with a high-performance power
plant found in heavy-duty hydraulic excavators.
The Boom and arm variations and
different attachments enable a wide range of applications, from
building dismantling and foundation demolition to bucket operations.
The nibbler can also be used for foundation and basement demolition.
The SK1600D is equipped with a number of safety features:
Anti-drift
Boom and Arm Holding Valves prevent the boom from suddenly dropping
if the hydraulic lines malfunction. All cylinders are equipped with
counterbalance valves.
The Inclination Alarm alerts the operator when the base machine
angles too steeply
The Tip-overAlarm automatically monitors the position of the arm to
warn the operator before the machine tips over.
A Lever Lock System prevents mechanical malfunctions.
A camera on the boom enables the operator to view attachment
operations. A rear-view camera on the back of the SK1600D enables
the operator to monitor activity behind the machine. Both come as
standard equipment.
To improve operator visibility, a tilt cab feature raises the cab 30
degrees. The wide, round cab interior gives the operator a broad
field of vision. Air conditioning and the double slide seat
contribute to higher operator comfort.

New HRD
Excavators
It was over twenty years ago that Kobelco launched the
world's first High-Reach Demolition excavator. Today just about all
excavator manufacturers are making HRD machines. Moreover, the
number of choices is growing rapidly as equipment manufacturers try
to outdo one another. This year we should see Kobelco launch the
SK1600D , a unit for Nabekai of Tokyo. The 165ton machine will be
capable of reaching well over 50mtr. Caterpillar meanwhile is busy
making a HRD version of it's new 385B. Case has also announced the
launch of a HRD-front for it's CX800 excavator. This model is
expected to support a telescopic front that reaches between 23mtr.
and 40mtr. Other manufacturers like Daewoo are also planning to make
new HRD-models. |

Despe
Takes the lead in world height record
The Italy based demolition-contractor Despe is to break the
world height record. The company expects to take delivery of a
55mtr. High Reach Demolition boom in the next few months, a unit
that will break the world height record by 5mtr. The company intends
mating the boom with the new Liebherr's R984 (130ton) excavator.
The old record was only 5 months old. It was another Italy based
demolition-contractor General Smontaggi that took delivery of it's
CMO2's special made PMI 980 demolition excavator with a 50mtr.
High-Reach Demolition boom earlier this year. Until now this was the
highest HRD excavator in the world. A record that for a long time
was owned by Nabekai in Japan that owned two 43mtr. Kobelco SK1000DW
excavators.
This company is expecting delivery of the new Kobelco SK1600D that
also reaches above 50mtr. and knowing Nabekai and Kobelco maybe even
above this 55mtr. We'll wait and see. |
